Vereens Turf Products - Family Operated for Three Generations...
It was 1962. It was the year that Marilyn Monroe died.
John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth
in 1962. And it was the year that the newly married
couple, Frankie and Linda Vereen started a new business in
the Wampee section of Longs, SC called Vereens.
Vereens was the outgrowth of the general store owned and
operated by Linda's parents, J.B. and Josephine
Livingston. J.B. had purchased the land and built the
original store in 1946. Known as J.B.'s, the store
provided the small tobacco farming community with gas,
groceries, clothing, seed, beer, and tobacco
products.
The store thrived and successfully supplied the local
community with almost every need for many years. Over the
years, the Livingstons began other business ventures and
by 1962, the store was ready for new leadership.
Initially, the Vereens continued the prosperous business
as it had been but with an added emphasis on farm supplies
such as fertilizer and chemicals. Tobacco farming was king in the 60s and early 70's, and Frankie saw the trend
and met the demands of his customers.
In the late 70's another trend was becoming painfully
obvious. It was becoming less profitable for the farmers
in the area.
Many were leaving the area, or finding
another line of work. Fortunately for Vereens, Wampee is
located within a few miles of an area you may have heard of. This area experienced (and continues to experience)
phenomenal growth in the 70's with much of the growth
attributable to the golfing industry. In fact, Myrtle Beach has become known as the Golf
Capital of the world.
Frankie saw obvious potential and began to concentrate the
efforts of Vereens on supplying the golf courses of
Myrtle Beach with every turf maintenance product needed
to keep the fairways and greens in tiptop shape. From
fertilizer to chemicals, seeds to rakes, flag markers to
cups and ball washers, Vereens would be the supplier that
always had the product needed in stock.
The golf course superintendents of Myrtle Beach and the
surrounding area soon took note. Vereens quickly became
Vereens Turf, and the volume of business extraordinary.
Through the 80s and 90s Vereens Turf continued to increase
in size and volume. In fact, to keep pace with growing
demand, Vereens Turf acquired its own fertilizer
manufacturing plant in Kingstree, SC. With a
tonnage capacity per day of over 200 tons, Vereens was now able to
custom mix fertilizer formulations for each and every
customer.
Today Vereens supplies golf courses, landscapers, and nurseries throughout the southeastern US. We have the
ability to manufacture, the inventory, the equipment, the employees, and the know-how, to satisfy even the most demanding project.
For almost forty years, Vereens has been operating under
the simple business principles of offering quality products at a fair price with guaranteed customer satisfaction. Now, under second and third generation family control, these principles will continued to be adhered to.
